Building Domestic Voluntary Carbon Markets
Senior Industry Leaders Will Share Their Insights
With a growing focus on the environment, countries are looking at carbon markets to meet the carbon-cutting requirements of Nationally Determined Commitments (NDCs), to pursue voluntary cooperation in order to hit their climate targets in line with Article 6 of the Paris agreement, and to tap into private-sector finance. National governments are building the capacity and legal frameworks to participate in the global carbon trade. Coordination and alignment with best practice and existing mechanisms is needed to boost transparency, integrity and buyer confidence.
Because of big differences between countries in land ownership, social structures, tax and regulatory regimes and carbon pricing, detailed discussion is required to align with internationally accepted standards and best practices. The need to bring in money from donors and the private sector worldwide should be balanced with building the needed domestic technical capacity and mechanisms to ensure benefit-sharing and safeguards for communities. The design and implementation of carbon registries will have to be customised to local contexts to help improve integrity and ensure carbon markets are positioned to channel financial resources to projects for the long term.
This Financial Times webinar in partnership with DAI will explore steps needed to align domestic voluntary carbon markets to ensure both long-term transparency and integrity. With focus on land-based carbon offset projects, speakers will discuss how the market can be developed to boost buyer confidence and protect the planet.
